Ibbeth Peril Cave, Dentdale

Wet Weather

Requires relatively dry and settled conditions. Entrance series floods to the roof; the main chamber should remain safe in these conditions. However, there is unlikely to be another way out.

Second connection (bedding at bottom of sandy area) to mud series

This is very tight (wide and very low, such that it compresses my chest). I think it would be passable but strenuous and slow. Ideally it should be attempted in a dry period so it’s not also wet.

Black Dub Pitch Downstream on Surface

Following the river downstream on the surface, a waterfall is reached, landing in the pool “Black Dub”. Two P anchors in the floor provide a y-hang (ideally tie into both, but alternatively tie into one + 1 krab). A 20m rope will reach the floor without the need to swim, but goes over 2 ledges (both requiring rope protection). There are no anchors or naturals which would support a higher belay as far as I could see. En route to this waterfall is a traverse which is easily done without aid but may be protected with a 10m traverse line (3F) if water levels cause concern. Just downstream of the waterfall, the river becomes a fine canyon dropping (free-climbable with care, no anchors) into Hell’s Cauldron. This makes a fantastic trip for a warm summer’s day following rain (so water levels would be more sporting but it’d be warm enough to swim comfortably).
